Mocapless as a Mixamo alternative
Mixamo is free, fast and still the first place most people look for a walk cycle. It is also a fixed library: if the clip you need is not one of its ~2,500, you are out of options. Mocapless starts where the library ends - you describe the motion and it is generated on your character.
What Mixamo does well
It auto-rigs a humanoid mesh in a minute, and it has a large, consistent, free library of captured motions. For a standard walk, run, idle or jump on a standard character there is nothing wrong with it, and a lot of shipped games use it.
Its limits are the library and the character. You cannot ask for a motion that is not there, you cannot change a clip's intent, and every animation lands on Mixamo's own skeleton - retargeting onto a rig with different proportions or bone names is your problem.
What Mocapless does instead
You type the motion: "a tired soldier limps forward, stops, looks over his shoulder, then sits down". A motion model trained on professional capture performs it - any motion you can describe, including sequences, moods and object handling, not a pick from a menu.
It is generated on your character's own skeleton, with your bone names, so the FBX imports onto your rig without a retargeting step. Feet are planted and root motion is solved. Upload an un-rigged mesh and a skeleton is built for you first.
Exports are FBX, GLB and BVH; the GLB plays in any glTF viewer, the BVH goes anywhere. There is a REST API and an MCP server for generating from your own tools.
When to use which
Use Mixamo when a stock clip is exactly what you need and your character is close to its proportions. Use Mocapless when the motion has to be specific - a particular sequence, a mood, a prop, a character with unusual proportions - or when you would otherwise be paying an animator or booking a capture session.
They combine well: many teams keep Mixamo for basic locomotion and generate the character-specific moments here.
Cost
Mixamo is free. Mocapless prices by the second of animation: about one credit per second, 60 free credits on signup, packs from $9 for 500 credits and plans from $19 a month for 1,500. A failed generation is refunded automatically.
